CHENNAI: Darshan Veeraraghavan won the Open category of the Sportstar golf tournament, beating three-time champion L. Selvadurai in a playoff, at the Madras Gymkhana Club Golf Annexe on Sunday. Both had par on the first play-off hole but Darshan made a birdie with an approach shot, under pressure, on the second. At the start of the day’s play, Darshan, a student at Anna University, was trailing ONGC’s Selvadurai by two shots. On the 10th, Darshan was five shots behind and after the 15th lagged by two. But then, Selvadurai made a fatal double bogey, after driving onto the left rough, and chipping it on to the fairway; the approach shot went into the right bunker. Darshan drove long, centre fairway, and his second shot was just off the green; a chip and a five-footer forced the playoff. Abinav Suresh (PSBB) won the Handicap event. Nirmal Shekar, Sports Editor, The Hindu, gave away the prizes. The results: Open: Winner: Darshan Veeraraghavan 146 (Gross); Runner-up: L. Selvadurai 146 (Gross); Second runner-up: C.V. Yudhveer 154 (Gross). Handicap winner: Abinav Suresh 132 (Nett); Ladies Handicap winner: Prathiksha Ravi 156 (Nett); Team winner: D. Nagaraj & Vishesh Sachdev & V.P. Ghanesh 280 (Nett). Bogey winner: Rajan Gero +2; Stableford winner: Patrick Martinet 37 pts; Closest to the pin: D. Ponkumar; Longest drive: Patrick Martinet; Wooden spoon: Markan daya Sharma.
