Anand to play Aronian in final

CHESS / Sasikiran ties for Ordix rapid title, Hari Krishna sixth

NEW DELHI: As expected, Viswanathan Anand chose to reserve his energies ahead of the much-anticipated final of the World rapid chess championship against Armenian Levon Aronian and drew all league games played on Saturday at Mainz.

Anand, eyeing his seventh successive rapid title in the German town, topped the six-game league with four points, half a point ahead of Aronian. Anand will also be looking to avenge the close loss suffered to Aronian in the World Chess960 final on Friday.

Meanwhile, in the 11th and final round of the Ordix Open rapid tournament, K. Sasikiran overpowered David Navara in the just 20 moves to share the title with the Czech Grandmaster on Sunday. Navara, who went into the final round with a one-point lead was already assured of the title due to his superior tiebreak score.

After Sasikiran, Georgia’s Mikhail Mchedlishvili also reached 9.5 points after beating Russia’s Alexander Grischuk. Eventually Sasikiran was placed third.

In fact, P. Hari Krishna , who finished sixth with nine points, should have nailed Navara in the ninth round but was very unlucky to have lost on time after holding a rook for a knight in the endgame where the players had a pawn each in the top-table battle. Later, like Hari, Parimarjan Negi also won the last two rounds to aggregate 7.5 points.

In the Banyoles International Open in Banyoles, Spain, Deep Sengupta and Aswin Jayaram continued their winning sequence and shared the lead with six others at three points.
