This refers to the report ‘Erode’s traffic woes continue’ (The Hindu dated August 18). The major problems for traffic woes are: ever increasing number of vehicles; no improvements in road conditions; absence of sub-ways, flyovers and over bridges; mania for speed; traffic violation; over speeding of vehicles; road side parking of vehicles obstructing free flow of traffic; absence of one-way system on Mettur road and very narrow roads; encroachments; drunken driving; driving vehicles without proper license; adolescent age drivers; and old vehicles causing mechanical failure. The following roads are facing heavy traffic congestion: Mettur road, Sathy Road, Surampatti Nal Road, Gandhiji Road, Brough Road, P.S.Park, G.H. and Collectorate junction. Even though the police department is making strenuous efforts to control the traffic, due to fundamental weaknesses, it becomes ineffective. Men police constables should be posted and patrolling and flying squads should move around the important roads to monitor the traffic problem. Subways and flyovers should be constructed immediately. Road dividers should be provided at important places. Erode bus stand should be trifurcated in areas such as Kani Rowthaer Kulam, Thindal and Solar. Ring road work should be completed early. These measures alone will ease the traffic problem. V.S.Ganesamurthy Erode Readers can mail to cbereaders@thehindu.co.in with telephone number and address.
