BANGALORE: The alleged kingpin in the multi-crore fake stamp paper racket, Abdul Kareem Lala alias Abdul Telgi, on Monday moved the Karnataka High Court against the verdict of a lower court sentencing him to seven years life imprisonment in the Madivala case. The 35th Additional City Civil and Special Sessions Judge (Special Court to try the fake stamp paper cases) had on June 19, 2007 found Telgi guilty along with Dr. K.M. Chennakeshava and K.H. Jnanendrappa. All the three had been sentenced to imprisonment under the Prevention of Corruption Act r/w (read with) Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code. In his appeal, Telgi said he had been charged under Sections 7, 12 and 31(1) and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act along with Section 120-B of the IPC. He said the Special Court order was erroneous as he was not a public servant and, hence, was not governed by the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He had urged the court to set aside the judgment of conviction. Justice A. C. Kabbin admitted the appeal and directed the authorities to procure all the records pertaining to the case. In a related development, Mr. Justice Kabbin granted bail to Dr. Chennakeshava who along with Dr. Jnanendrappa is accused of having helped Telgi by giving him fake medical certificates.
