Youth held on cheating charge
Special Correspondent
Tambaram: Police have arrested a 25-year-old youth from Kolkata on charges of cheating a consultancy firm in Adambakkam that helped him get admission in a medical university in Romania last year.
Om Prakash Sharma of Kolkata, approached Om Consultants in Adambakkam in July last year. Proprietor of the firm Rudra Kumar made arrangements for admission to the University of Oradea, and arranged his travel documents. The firm charged him Rs. 1.07 lakh for the services. Om Prakash paid Rs. 50,000 and in November made a second payment of Rs. 57,000 through a demand draft drawn on a bank in Kolkata before leaving for Romania. But it could not be encashed as Om Prakash had cancelled it. Kumar filed a complaint with police in January this year. The details were forwarded to the University, which suspended Om Prakash and he returned to Kolkata in April, where he started his own firm. Kumar came to know about this and informed the police.
On the pretext of seeking admission, a policeman phoned him and a meeting was fixed near a bank in Kolkata. Om Prakash was arrested and brought to the city on Monday.
