EXQUISITE: A 58-piece silver dinner set weighing 12 kg is one of the major attractions at an exhibition of gold jewellery being organised by MMTC in Kochi. —
KOCHI: The festival of gold, an exhibition of gold jewellery, organised by Minerals and Metals Trading Corporation (MMTC) on the MMTC office premises at Jos Trust Building on Chittoor Road, Ernakulam, will conclude on August 24. It was inaugurated by Mini Anthony, Secretary, Kochi Corporation. The company has been showcasing Indian jewellery through festivals in various cities. The event provides a platform for jewellery craftsmen to exhibit the best of designs and craftsmanship from different regions of the country. Silverware too
Traditional and contemporary jewellery from South India and Mumbai as well as gold and silver medallions in 999 purity and MMTC’s brand of Sanchi silverware range are on display. MMTC has been one of the prime movers of the hallmarking scheme in India along with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), World Gold Council and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. Apart from jewellery, a host of other facilities such as hallmarking and purchase guidance are extended to customers at the exhibitions, according to Sanjiv Batra, chairman and managing director, MMTC. The company is planning to enter into joint ventures with retail players in cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Panjim and Bhubaneswar. It is exploring the potential of setting up jewellery parks in Special Economic Zones. Assaying and hallmarking centres are to be set up in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bangalore, Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar. BIS is planning to make hallmarking for gold jewellery mandatory by January 2008.
