After a long wait, the management plan for Mangalavanam bird sanctuary, Kochi, is finally ready. At least a couple of years have passed since the first attempts to prepare such a plan for the sanctuary. The avian visitors have long abandoned the sanctuary. Over the years, the sanctuary and adjoining areas have been facing several threats. Promine nt are the sound and environment pollution, silting of waterbody inside the sanctuary, high-rise buildings and the move to allot parking lot for cars. Many projects were proposed to protect the sanctuary. One such was to set up an interpretation centre to make the public aware of the sensitive nature of the sanctuary and the birds that visited the place. The proposal still remains on paper. K.S. Sudhi
