On how best the elderly could contribute to nation-building.
KOCHI: Older persons’ associations have resolved to work for a ‘New India and a New Kerala.’ A two-day meeting of the functionaries of senior citizens’ associations in the State, held at Udayamperoor over the weekend, adopted a Senior Citizens’ Charter of Rights and Duties. The meeting, attended by presidents and secretaries of 75 associations, was called to discuss how best the elderly could contribute to nation-building and society’s welfare. They were keen that their experiences, skills and remaining energies be used for the common cause. The charter called upon ‘all senior citizens of Kerala and their associations’ to launch programmes to “create a New India and a New Kerala where human rights and all the values enshrined in the Constitution of India become a reality for all the people.” The charter also urges them to utilise their “knowledge, experience and expertise for the development of society and for creative transformation, particularly in the area of education, health, public conveniences and governmental administration.” The older persons should also “enrich their own lives by securing their health, strengthening their family and social relations and exploring continuously ways and means of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual growth through wellness programmes, literacy, artistic and all other creative activities.” The conference asked the senior citizens’ associations to persuade all organs of the State to execute constitutional provisions for the care and protection of the aged and to appreciate the role that senior citizens can play in social development. Nearly 150 functionaries of the associations spread across the State showed up for the meeting. The Senior Citizens’ Association, Kollam, will organise the State-level celebration of World Elders’ Day on October 1. There will be a rally of elders on the day, apart from a public meeting where very senior citizens will be honoured. The Udayamperoor conference was organised by the Kerala Federation of Senior Citizens’ Associations.
