PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy unveiled the statue of freedom fighter and doyen of Communist movement P. Jeevanantham here on Tuesday.

Describing Jeevanantham as a multi-faceted personality, Mr. Rangasamy recalled his role as an activist of the freedom movement, a functionary of the self-respect movement and an outstanding Communist leader.

He also recalled his contribution to Tamil language and literature. Kamaraj had high regards for the leader, Mr. Rangasamy said.

Though the idea to install Jeevanantham’s statue in the Union Territory was mooted by the then Chief Minister, R.V. Janakiraman, during the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rule, the present Government had fulfilled the project, he added.

Tamil Nadu State secretary of the Communist Party of India D. Pandian thanked the Puducherry Government for installing the statue.

Mr. Pandian referred to Jeevanantham’s remarkable contributions to the socio-political scenario of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory. He commended Mr. Rangasamy and Mr. Janakiraman for not allowing political differences to come in the way of fulfilling initiatives to honour great freedom fighters and outstanding leaders.

Education Minister M. O. H. F. Shahjahan said the biography of Jeevanantham would be included in the school curriculum.
