Tap renewable energy sources, says Pudukottai Collector

Special Correspondent

PUDUKOTTAI: The Collector, S.J. Chiru, has appealed to elected representatives of local bodies to tap renewable energy sources to reduce power bill.

Speaking at a seminar on renewable energy sources here on Monday, Mr. Chiru said that the power bill of village panchayats ran to Rs. 20,000 a month, which was a major drain on their finances.

The 498 panchayats in the district had to pay nearly Rs. 10 crore a month by way of electricity charges alone.

It was time the local bodies tapped alternative energy sources to meet their energy requirement, he said.

Village panchayats could take advantage of the subsidy provided by the Union Government for putting up solar power streetlights. Similarly, bio gas could also be promoted in a big way.

Later, Mr. Chiru distributed prizes to winners of elocution, painting and essay writing competitions conducted for school and college students on the topic of renewable energy.
