Closure of temples “not solution to untouchability”

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: Just keeping the temples sealed or locked is not a solution to the festering communal problem and discrimination against the Adi Dravidars, said Vai. Balasundaram, president of the All India Ambedkar People’s Party.

The scourge of denying temple entry to the Adi Dravidars had still beenin vogue at many places in Tamil Nadu, and it was tantamount to perpetuating untouchability. To scuttle the issue, the Government had adopted a wrong strategy of closing vulnerable temples, Mr. Balasundaram told a press conference here on Monday. At Kuladeepamangalam in Villupuram district and at Old Sooramaglam in Salem district, the Draupadi Amman temples were kept under lock and key to avert caste clashes. In such cases, the Government should invoke the provisions of the Untouchability Act against the local legislators and Ministers for their insensitivity to the sentiments of the people and inaction to resolve the issue through talks.

The ‘rath yatra’, taken out by the party on forging socio-religious harmony, arrived here on Monday after logging 3,200 km and covering 24 districts. Mr. Balasundaram received a plethora of complaints on untouchability, double-tumbler system and atrocities against Adi Dravidars. Over 10 lakh acres of ‘panjami’ lands were grabbed by influential persons in the State.

Therefore, he urged the Government to bring out a white paper on the status of such lands, and also, pass a separate legislation to restore the same to Adi Dravidars. He would also meet the President, the Prime Minister, and the Leader of Opposition to highlight the issue. Prior to that, he would call on Chief Minister M. Karunanidh and Governor Surjit Singh Barnala.
