People thought the officials have come to evict them NLC officials say they have come to desilt Paravanar canal
CUDDALORE: Irked by the land acquisition policy of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, the people of Karivetti in the Sethiathope block held two officials hostage and deflated the tyres of their vehicles on Tuesday.
When the officials went to the village along with three earthmovers, the residents thought they had come to evict them as part of the land acquisition process.
With the surcharged atmosphere already prevailing in scores of villages in the NLC vicinity, the sudden entry of officials in their village provoked them. They kept the officials as hostages on a school campus. On information, a contingent of police force, led by Dharmarajan, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sethiathope), rushed there.
Meanwhile, Selvi Ramajeyam and Arunmozhithevan, MLAs, Silambu Selvi, district panchayat chairperson, went there and pacified them.
The officials told them that, in fact, they had come to desilt the Paravanar canal to avert any possible flood threat.
They stoutly denied that they had come to forcibly acquire the village lands. Later, the residents relented and freed the officials. The proposal for large-scale acquisition to facilitate expansion of the lignite mine has encountered stiff resistance from the residents.
