ALAPPUZHA: In what is being termed a “symbolic protest” against the State Government’s “failure” to address the needs of the poor, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) began distribution of Onam kits to the needy. The State-level launch of the Opposition’s protest was held at Thazhakara in Mavelikara here on Tuesday. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala, inaugurating the distribution of kits, said the UDF was undertaking the task to protest against the Government decision not to distribute Onam kits this year. “Last year, the Government could give kits worth only Rs.35, and that too was a namesake gesture. This year, they are not giving anything at all. This Government has been insensitive to the basic needs of the people. The decision not to give Onam kits to the poor is just one example. We have several other examples of its insensitivity, including its failure to give compensation to the kin of those who died of fever,” he said. Kit’s components
The Thazhakara Congress mandal committee, which organised the programme, distributed 500 kits, each said to be worth around Rs. 300 and comprising 15 items including rice.
