TALKING TOUGH: PDP leader Abdul Nasir Maudany addressing a news conference near the Karipur airport on Tuesday.
MALAPPURAM: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasir Maudany has warned the Congress that it would be held responsible if the country goes to the polls and fascist forces return to power in the wake of the controversial nuclear deal with the United States of America. He was addressing a media conference near Calicut International Airport at Karipur on Tuesday on his way to Kozhikode. Mr. Maudany expressed hope that the Congress would not precipitate the issue nor pledge the nation’s self-esteem in the name of the nuclear deal. Mr. Maudany, who was accorded a massive reception in the city in the evening, said the nuclear policy being followed by the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre was tantamount to surrendering to imperialist forces. The PDP leader said he would spend the rest of his life for the uplift of the marginalised. “The PDP will work for the marginalised and the downtrodden without an eye on votes. We will show that social commitment is possible even for political parties.” Mr. Maudany refrained from speaking about the circumstances that led to his incarceration, and said: “that would lead to unpleasant situations, and would hurt several people.” He said his party would spearhead the formation of an alternative front to the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front in the State by serving as a unifying force of the poor and the downtrodden. The PDP would constitute a panel for policy formulation and the party’s acting chairman C.K. Abdul Azeez would be the chairman of the panel. K.A. Hasan would be the working chairman, he said. Mr. Maudany will be a member of the panel. Mr. Maudany said he received strong support from the people of Malappuram during his term in jail. The supporters raised Rs.8 lakh for moving the Supreme Court for his bail. “It was not big donations. The contributions of ordinary people of Malappuram made up the amount,” the PDP leader said. Mr. Maudany evaded questions about the IUML and its alleged role in his arrest. The PDP leader said he regretted having alienated many people with his tough stance.
