Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The search for the best mathematical talents will begin soon with the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) holding its Regional Mathematical Olympiad at various centres across the State on October 7.

Sponsored jointly by the NBHM, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), the Olympiad will be held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Adoor, Ernakulam, Irinjalakkuda, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Mananthavady and Kannur.

Proposals for new centres will be considered, said A. Vijayakumar, Regional Coordinator, Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), Department of Mathematics, Cusat.

Students of classes 11 and 12 can apply for the event. A few exceptionally talented students of standard 10 can also apply. Twenty students appearing for the regional Olympiad will be short-listed for the INMO to be held on the Cusat campus in February. Thirty top achievers of the INMO will be invited for a camp.

The Indian team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (Spain) will be selected during this event. India was placed 25th in the last edition of the international Olympiad held in Vietnam. Students representing the country had won three silver medals.

There is no prescribed syllabus for the Olympiad. Thrust areas will be geometry, number theory, algebra and combinatorics. Dr. Vijayakumar said the questions asked in the regional round would be challenging, as it is the first round in the selection of a team for the INMO. All students selected for the INMO will be given merit certificates. They are eligible for NBHM scholarships for higher studies.

There is no prescribed application form. Principals of recognised schools can forward the list of participants indicating their names, class, residential address, phone numbers and the centre along with a registration fee of Rs.25 each by cash, money order or demand draft to be drawn in favour of Regional Coordinator, INMO, payable at SBT, Cusat branch only.

Applications should be forwarded through proper channel. The last date for submitting the application is September 10. To get previous question papers and information, write along with a Rs.25-stamped, self-addressed envelope of size at least 10x8 to Dr. A. Vijayakumar, Regional Coordinator, INMO, Department of Mathematics, Cusat. Phone: 0484- 2577518. vijay@cusat.ac.in.
