A SPLENDIT SIGHT: Shivanasamudra Falls has attained its full splendour due to release of water from KRS and the Kabini.

BANGALORE: The State Government has organised a two-day Gaganachukki Falls Utsav-2007 at Shivanasamudra in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district on Saturday and Sunday.

The Gaganachukki Falls, located 120 km from Bangalore, is in full flow following copious rainfall in the catchment areas of Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini dams in Cauvery basin. As the dams’ water levels have reached the maximum, water is being discharged into the river, making Gaganachukki Falls a must-see. Downstream from the falls is the Asia’s first hydro-electric project, established in 1902.

Minister for Transport N. Cheluvarayaswamy, who is also in charge of Mandya district, told presspersons that the area was fenced and facilities such as toilets and drinking water were being provided by the Mandya Zilla Panchayat to visiting tourists. He said Rs. 5 crore had been spent on various facilities, including construction of a tourist hotel, at the falls. The construction of a ropeway between Gaganachukki and Barachukki Falls would reduce distance of two km, he said.

Departments of Public Works, Forests, Kannada and Culture and Tourism and the zilla panchayat have taken the responsibility of organising various programmes. Cultural programmes on the inaugural day would be held from 4 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. The valedictory of the programme would be held on Sunday at 6 p.m. Malavalli MLA K. Annadani, Minister for Tourism B. Sriramulu, Minister for Housing D.T. Jayakumar and Mr. Cheluvarayaswmay would participate in the two-day programmes.
