Anganwadi workers demand reinstatement of four suspended workers

House arrest: Anganwadi workers gherao the ICDS Project Office in Nizamabad on Tuesday

NIZAMABAD: Anganwadi workers under the banner of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, here on Tuesday, laid siege to the office of the Project Director, Integrated Child Development Scheme, demanding reinstatement of four anganwadi workers of Kudwanpur centre and an enquiry into alleged irregularities in some other centres.

The agitators relented after securing an assurance from the in-charge Collector G. Ramnarayana Reddy for reinstatement of workers, besides an enquiry into irregularities. The agitation lasted for three hours. The functioning of the ICDS office was paralyzed as the agitators prevented the staff from entering it, and gheraoed the Project Director Ms. Saralakumari.

Addressing the gathering, the union district joint secretary B. Vijayalakshmi, said the services of anganwadi workers S. Vijayalakshmi, B. Vijayalakshmi, Saravva and Prameela were suspended under the pretext that the Kudwanpur centre in Armoor project was having less than 30 children. Describing their suspension as improper and unjustifiable, she said instead of making efforts to increase the number of beneficiaries, the authorities in a bid to close the centre suspended the workers. She demanded the immediate reinstatement of the suspended workers.

Later in a memorandum submitted to the in-charge Collector, the union leaders alleged that in Nizamabad, Armoor and Bodhan projects, workers did not receive wages for the last five months. In Kamareddy project, 36 aayas were denied wages for three months. Irregularities in supply of oils and foods were aplenty. In Madnoor project sub-centres were not receiving complete quota of ration allotted to them, she said.
