Renovation of temple wall under way

Staff Reporter

FACELIFT: Work on construction of compound around the Sri Brahadeeswarar temple in Gangaikondacholapuram near Jayamkondam in Perambalur district in progress.

JAYAMKONDAM: Construction of a wall around the Sri Brahadeeswarar temple in Gangaikondacholapuram is underway.

The temple, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, was declared a ‘World Heritage Monument’ by UNESCO three years ago. Battered by weather over the centuries, the wall was in a bad condition.

The ASI, which renovated the ‘Vimanam’ of the shrine a couple of years ago, has now taken up the task of rebuilding it.

The stone walls have been dismantled, with a preliminary test done on each stone to ascertain its structural stability. Expert stone workers from Pudukottai district have been engaged.

The work is expected to be completed in about two years.
