Port workers’ strike from September 1

KOCHI: Trade unions at the Cochin Port Trust have constituted a council to coordinate an indefinite strike from September 1. The unions had served notice on the Port management on August 16. A statement from the Cochin Port Staff Association said the strike was proposed country-wide demanding, among other things, restoration of the age of retirement of port and dock workers to 60, merger of 50 per cent dearness allowance (DA) with the pay effective from April 2005 and an interim relief of Rs.1,000 a month to the workers, including pensioners, with effect from January this year. — Staff Reporter
