Justice Sathasivam sworn in

NEW DELHI: Justice P. Sathasivam, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was on Tuesday sworn in Judge of the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan administered the oath of office.
The ceremony was attended by Judges of the Supreme Court, law officers and many advocates, including those practising in the Madras High Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
With this appointment the number of Judges in the Supreme Court including the CJI has gone up to 24, against the sanctioned strength of 26. Justice P.K. Balasubramanyan is due to retire on August 27 and the strength will come down to 23.
Justice Sathasivam (58) will have a tenure of about seven years as judge of the apex court. He hails from a backward class agricultural family in Erode district of Tamil Nadu. He was initially appointed a permanent judge of the Madras High Court in January 1996 was and shifted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in April this year.
He represents Tamil Nadu after Justice A.R. Lakshmanan, who retired in March this year.
