Rushmi rallies from brink to get past Parul

Special Correspondent

NOIDA: Top seed Rushmi Chakravarthi recovered from the brink of defeat to outwit National Games champion Parul Goswami 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the first round of the Unitech ITF women’s tennis tournament at the Noida Sports Stadium here on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Rushmi with eight singles titles at this level, was staring at defeat two points away at 4-5 in the second set when she regrouped to outplay the 20-year-old.

The third-seeded Tara Iyerbreezed past qualifier Sophia Mulsap of Thailand. In the pre-quarterfinals, she will be challenged by another qualifier Abby Hedges of Australia who got past Chika Terasawa of Japan in a tough three-setter.
