Bhandare sworn in Governor

BHUBANESWAR: Distinguished lawyer and senior Congress leader Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare was sworn in as Orissa Governor at a solemn ceremony at the Raj Bhavan here on Tuesday evening.

Orissa High Court Chief Justice A. K. Ganguly administered the oath of office to Mr. Bhandare, who replaced Rameshwar Thakur who has since become the Governor of Karnataka.

A host of dignitaries, including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Assembly Speaker Maheswar Mohanty, Rural Development Minister Biswabhushan Harichandan attended the swearing-in ceremony.

State Election Commissioner Sanjib Hota, Chief Secretary Ajit Tripathy and Director-General of Police Amarananda Pattanayak were also present on the occasion.

Talking to presspersons after the ceremony, Mr. Bhandare expressed satisfaction over his appointment to the post.

He said he knew the State well as he had association great stalwarts such as the late Harekrushna Mahtab and the late Biju Patnaik.

Orissa, which had abundant natural and mineral resources, was also culturally one of the richest States in the country, he observed.

Mr. Bhandare was accorded a ceremonial reception at the Biju Patnaik airport on his arrival from New Delhi. The Chief Minister was among those who received him.
