Students at crossroads

S. Harpal Singh

ADILABAD: Though a new degree college for tribal students has started functioning at Utnoor this academic year, its existence is not acknowledge for the simple fact that the Government has not accorded it the necessary permission. It may just be a procedural delay but, it is bound to mar the prospects of the 120 students enrolled in the college.

After a rather prolonged effort by all those concerned, the Government in March this year agreed to sanction a degree college exclusively for tribal students under the Tribal Sub Plan to be established at Utnoor.

All the preliminary formalities were gone through with the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) ensuring not only sufficient extend of land but, a few teachers too in the shape of guest lecturers and some others on deputation.

“Delay in the grant of permission will delay the college in getting required recognition and affiliation without which there will be no validity to the enrolment. Also, no faculty can be formally recruited,” pointed out an official.

Courses offered

The college at Laltekdi at present offers B.A and B.Com courses with 60 students enrolled in each stream. 32 of the enrolled students are girls. There are four guest lecturers while three others were posted to the college on deputation. Besides, some non teaching staff were also posted on deputation from colleges under the ITDA.

ITDA

According to a proposal sent to the Commissionerate of Collegiate Education, B.A and B.Com courses were to be started initially. Problems have not surfaced so far because the ITDA under took measures to start the college at the earliest by allocating land and building for temporarily housing the college. It also provides for remunerations to those working as guest lecturers. “How long will this continue, is a matter of conjecture,” observed a lecturer.
