30 women taken into preventive custody
Staff Reporter
VIRUDHUNAGAR: Thirty women and six children who attempted to block traffic in Tiruchuzhi protesting against the police, who picked up four women belonging to Pulikurichi in connection with a murder case, were taken into preventive custody on Tuesday. The police said that D. Saravana Kumar (32) was murdered by an armed gang at Tamaraikulam near Tiruchuzhi on Monday, when he along with his friends, K. Marikannan (25) and D. Jeyaseelan (35), was returning home after attending a temple function.
The deceased and Marikannan were accused in the murder of Namakodi.
Suspecting the fatal assault on Saravana Kumar could be a sequel to Namakodi’s murder, the police took into custody four women, including Namakodi’s wife Chandra (41).
Irked by the police action, the women tried to picket road demanding the immediate release of the women. They insisted that the police should try to arrest the accused and not their family members.
The women, who were taken into preventive custody, were released in the evening.
