He is being treated in the district hospital Associates of Korangu Krishna gang attack him
Chitradurga: Chidananda (32), an undertrial lodged at the district jail here, was admitted to the district hospital after he was allegedly beaten up by a dozen associates of the Korangu Krishna gang on Monday. The gang also reportedly assaulted an inmate, Tippeswamy of Pavagada taluk of Tumkur district, a month ago. He succumbed to injuries later. Inquiry
A magisterial inquiry has been sought into the incident. An associate of Chidananda told The Hindu that the gang had became uncontrollable inside jail. The gang members beat up other inmates for petty issues, he said. Chidananda has requested the jail authorities to shift him to the Tumkur jail. It is learnt that he was brought here because of inadequate escort staff in the Tumkur jail to produce him before the magistrate for hearing. Cellphones
Highly placed sources said that the gang had over 20 cellphones and a colour television set inside the jail. “They get non-vegetarian food and liquor inside the jail and nobody questions them,” they added. The sources said that the fight between Tippeswamy and the gang members broke out over the use of cellphones inside the jail. The sources blamed the jail authorities for such incidents. Support
“The gang members enjoy the support of the jail authorities. No official came to the rescue of Chidananda when he was being beaten up by the gang members,” they alleged. It was because of the carelessness of the officials, two inmates escaped from the jail on August 19, they alleged. Helpless
Jail Superintendent Veerabhadrappa expressed helplessness in controlling the gang members. He said that he had written several times to higher officials to shift the gang members to other jails, but nothing had been done. The jail needed 25 wardens, but there were only 13, he added. Meanwhile, it is learnt that Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) N. Jairamayya visited the jail here on Tuesday.
