Protest against delay in payment of wages

DAVANGERE: A large number of women workers staged a dharna in front of the zilla panchayat office here on Tuesday in protest against the alleged non-payment of wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

They said that they had not been given wages though they had worked for two months. They demanded that guidelines be followed while implementing the scheme.

The use of machinery should be stopped, they added.

The agitators alleged that in many places, machinery had been used depriving workers of 100 days of employment. The zilla panchayat should provide wages to those who had registered their names even if they were not given work, they said.

Earlier, the agitators took out a procession from the ITI College to the zilla panchayat office.

President of the zilla panchayat H.B. Manjappa promised the agitators that he would hold discussions with Chief Executive Officer of the panchayat Nijalingappa soon and ensure payment of wages to those who had worked under the scheme.

He would direct the Chief Executive Officer and other officials not to use machinery to take up works under the scheme, he told them.
