CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Tuesday urged the Union Government to sanction an international airport at Bahadurgarh in Jhajjar district. Speaking at the 30th meeting of the National Capital Region Planning Board in New Delhi, he said there was a definite need for an additional airport in the vicinity of Delhi. The Haryana Government had submitted a proposal for an airport at Bahadurgarh to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation. According to an official spokesman here, Mr. Hooda emphasised the need to speed up work on various roads and rail connectivity between Delhi and NCR towns. Construction of the Badarpur fly-over should be completed at the earliest, he said, pleading that Faridabad town be connected with the Taj Expressway to provide for an alternative route to Agra. He also called for strengthening the road infrastructure in the NCR sub-region of Haryana. Mr. Hooda urged the Board to fund the entire cost of studies awarded for finding workable solutions in the areas of mass transport, mass housing and similar projects in the NCR region. He said the pattern of funding by loans through NCRPB was grossly inadequate. He also urged the Board to reduce the interest rates and increase the moratorium and repayment period for all the projects financed by it. He said the objectives of creation of NCR could not be achieved unless “we lay adequate emphasis on rural areas of NCR and eventually make them as liveable as the towns”. The Haryana Government was committed to providing facilities in villages at par with towns and it had already constituted a Haryana Rural Development Authority, he said, adding, “Since the newly-created Authority does not have adequate funds for executing projects in rural areas, the NCRPB must come forward and finance these projects with a grant component.” He urged the Centre to allocate sufficient funds for undertaking projects for cleaning the Yamuna.
