TAMBARAM: S.P.B. Charan and Venkat Prabhu, producer and director respectively of Tamil movie ‘Chennai 600028’ inaugurated Smriti 2007, an annual inter-college cultural festival at S.D.N.B. Vaishnav College for Women in Chromepet on Tuesday.
They took centrestage for less than half-an-hour, but it was enough to create a frenzy among the few thousand students assembled for the inaugural function.
Students of the host and participant colleges joined them as the duo hummed hit songs from the film. The duo pulled each others’ leg and the audience loved it.
Soon after the welcome address, Venkat Prabhu began his brief speech with the by now popular one-liner: ‘enna koduma sir idhu’, at which the students burst into laughter and applauded.
“This is the first time I am taking part as a chief guest and this is my first visit to your college. I do not know if Charan came here last evening,” Venkat Prabhu said amidst laughter.
And, when Charan started to sing the popular number from the film ‘Yaaro …’ the students joined him. Charan would sing one line and the audience, the next.
The two celebrities wished the event a grand success and left the packed auditorium, but not before screaming “Saroja” to which the students responded spontaneously with “samaan nikaalo”.
College principal T. Sumithra said that about 50 colleges in and around Chennai would be taking part in the three-day event.
More than 500 students from other colleges would be competing in about a dozen events organised by the college.
