Akademi member cries foul

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Giriraj Kishore, a member of the board and general council of the Central Sahitya Akademi, which is holding its three-day ‘bhasha samman’ awards function here, alleged here on Tuesday that he was not allowed to read a statement at the board’s meeting.

Dr. Kishore told The Hindu, when he sought permission of Gopi Chand Narang, president of the Akademi, to read the statement, he was told to submit it to the secretary of the organisation.

While declining this directive of the chair, the renowned Hindi writer from Kanpur said he had decided to send the statement to the board members by post.

In the statement on ‘the privileges of the board members’, Dr. Kishore referred to his resignation in December last year as convener of Hindi advisory committee of the Akademi which was, however, rejected.

Allegations

He has made several allegations against Prof. Narang, including discharging duties in a dictatorial manner and violating the regulations of the Akademi. Dr. Kishore charged Prof. Narang with ‘pocketing’ all democratic processes of the Akademi and trying to seek a re-election in February 2008, in violation of the accepted norms of the organisation.

He recalled only former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had held the office of the Akademi’s president for two terms, for strengthening it in the 50s.

The veteran writer said delegation of two journalists was taken on a tour to France and Cuba recently, without the approval of the Akademi’s General Council.
