GRIM STRUGGLE: Activists of Progressive Organisation for Women being arrested by police while on a protest in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
HYDERABAD: Several political parties and people’s organisations have condemned the alleged gang rape of tribals by the Grey Hounds police engaged in combing operations in Paderu agency area of Visakhapatnam. Leaders and activists of the organisations were taken into custody when they tried to move towards the State Secretariat in protest against the incident. Tense situation prevailed at Tank Bund for some time as members raised slogans against the police allegedly involved in outraging the modesty of the tribal women on the pretext of being sympathetic to the Maoists. ‘Initiate steps’
Jostling ensued as the members led by Progressive Organisation for Women attempted to burn the effigy of the grey hounds’ police and the police tried to prevent them. They wanted steps to be initiated to identify those involved in the incident and register cases under Prevention of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on them. The Government should provide medical help and protection to tribals in the agency areas. In a statement, the CPI (M) State committee criticised the statements made by Director-General of Police M.A. Basith that the charges were aimed at stopping the police from undertaking combing operations. Revolutionary Writers’ Association lamented that the police resorted to such ‘atrocious act’ to terrorise tribals who were up in arms against the moves to handover Bauxite and other valuable resources to multinationals. Andhra Pradesh Girijana Sangham, Dalita Hakkula Porata Samiti and other organisations condemned the incident.
