Flight operations restored at Chennai
Special Correspondent
Mono-pulse Secondary Surveillance Radar is now operational
CHENNAI: Normal flight operations were restored at the Chennai airport late on Tuesday evening, after the Mono-pulse Secondary Surveillance Radar became operational.
According to Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials, an internal team of experts on radars, stationed in Chennai, rectified the problems and made it operational on Tuesday evening.
The instrument had developed technical, mechanical and software problems. Owing to the problem for the past two days, the radar was totally shut down on Tuesday and the repair works were taken up simultaneously, said K. Ramalingam, Regional Executive Director, AAI.
“We engaged additional air traffic controllers to regulate the traffic during the period, when the secondary radar became dysfunctional,” he said.
After observing the functioning of the secondary radar for over half-an-hour, it was handed over to the Air Traffic Controllers, Dr. Ramalingam added.
The Secondary Radar became dysfunctional since Saturday night, resulting in the delay in arrival and departure of flights.
