CHENNAI: The State Government organised a function here on Tuesday to mark the birth centenary of Communist leader P. Jeevanandam.

Presiding over the function, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said though he differed with Jeevanandam on various issues, they had a common objective of uplift of the poor and the downtrodden in society.

Jeevanandam was the first to demand in the Assembly that Tamil be made the medium of instruction in schools and colleges.

He was firm on introducing Tamil in administration and courts.

The present State Government was only implementing his vision.

Appeal to parties

Appealing to political parties to mobilise people to safeguard the unity and integrity of the country, the Chief Minister hinted that there would be no threat to the Central Government if the parties remained together.

State Information Minister Parithi Elamvazhuthi said the DMK and Communists had a long association.

CPI national executive committee member R. Nallakannu said throughout his career Jeevanandam fought for the liberation of Dalits.

Social change

He was of the firm view that only through politics social change could be brought about.

He was against imposition of language and advocated introduction of regional language at all levels.

Congress Legislative Party leader D. Sudarsanam, State secretariat member of the CPI (M) A. Soundarajan, PMK MLA M.Arumugham, K.M.Khader Mohideen, MP, and Thol. Tirumavalavan of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal were among those who recalled the sacrifices made by Jeevanandam for the country’s freedom and for the emancipation of Dalit community.
