Centre urged to start train service between Bangalore, Mangalore

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: A delegation of Ministers, and Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council from coastal Karnataka districts called on Union Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad and urged for early recommencement of passenger traffic between Bangalore and Mangalore via Hassan.

Memorandum

In a memorandum submitted to the Railway Minister, the delegation noted that even though the freight traffic had been restored on the line eight months ago, passenger service was yet to be restored. More than 500 buses plied between Bangalore and the coastal towns and with the national highways in “pathetic” condition, thousands of passengers were unnecessarily being put to inconvenience. The delegation, led by Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya, also called on Union Minister of Water Resources Saifuddin Soz and sought early clearance for the Rs. 291-crore project to prevent sea erosion in the coastal region.

Compensation

The delegation also met Defence Minister A.K. Antony and urged for higher compensation for those displaced by the Seabird Naval Base project in Karwar and sought expansion of the base to provide for civilian services.

The people’s representatives called on Union Minister for Surface Transport T.R. Baalu and sought reconsideration of the tender value for the work to relay the Shiradi Ghat section of National Highway 48 and early completion of four-laning of the stretches of National Highway 17 and 48 from Suratkal to B.C. Road.

The delegation included Minister for Fisheries and Endowment B. Nagaraja Shetty, Minister for Small Scale Industries Shivananda Nayak, Udupi MP Manorama Madhwaraj, MLAs Sunil Kumar, Yogish Bhat and Lalji R. Mendon, and MLC Ganesh Karnik.

Special Representative of Karnataka Government in Delhi and Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minister Mahima Patel accompanied the delegation. Mangalore MP and president of Karnataka unit of Bharatiya Janata Party D.V. Sadananda Gowda, was also part of the delegation.
