Sonia cutting short visit
Johannesburg: Congress president Sonia Gandhi arrived here on Tuesday on a visit aimed at strengthening ties between India and South Africa.
Ms. Gandhi is, however, cutting short her visit, which was earlier planned for four days, by dropping Durban from her itinerary.
“Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have now arranged for the Congress president to visit only Johannesburg and Cape Town,” a spokesperson at the Indian High Commission told PTI in Durban.
The UPA chairperson is scheduled to meet the former South African President, Nelson Mandela, in Johannesburg on Wednesday and then travel to Cape Town to hold talks with President Thabo Mbeki and Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka on Thursday.
