Three constables arrested in Tiruchi

For bid to extract money from a Lankan Tamil family

TIRUCHI: Three police head constables — two attached to the crime wing of Cantonment station and the third to the crime wing of Navalpattu station (rural district) — were arrested on Tuesday night by a team of CB CID police when they reportedly attempted to extract Rs. 1.3 lakh from a Sri Lankan Tamil family in K.K. Nagar.

The police sources said that the trio had gone to collect the money from Ramesh, a Sri Lankan Tamil, who arrived here from London on August 3 on a visit to his aunt’s house.

A couple of days later, a group approached him demanding Rs. 10 lakh, threatening that he would be fixed in a hawala transaction case if he did not do so.

Since Mr. Ramesh pleaded helplessness, the group had settled for Rs. 1.5 lakh. The same day, he had parted with Rs. 20,000 and three sovereigns of jewellery to the group.

The head constables, Ramasamy (Navalpattu station), and Kumar and Sahayaselvam (Cantonment station) had gone on Tuesday to collect the remaining money when they were arrested, police sources said.

Ramesh had brought the matter to the notice of the CB CID Inspector Thangavel, a family friend.

The latter kept a wait with his team at the former’s house and on arrival of the constables trapped them and handed them over to the custody of K.K. Nagar police.
