NEW DELHI: Seven sportspersons were presented the Rajiv Gandhi State Sports Award 2006-07 at a function held at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Bawana here on Wednesday, to mark the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister.
The winners are Vikram Bhatnagar (shooting), Sourav Vij (athletics), Abhishek Verma (archery), Sanjeev Sejwal (swimming), Parimarjan Negi, Tanya Sachdev (chess) and Balwan Singh (paralympic athletics). All of them were presented with a cheque for Rs.2 lakh and a memento each.
Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh and Outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar were among those present at the ceremony. A large number of area residents attended the function and witnessed the eighth All-India Rajiv Gandhi Wrestling Gold Cup and seventh All-India Rajiv Gandhi Girls Basketball Tournament that were simultaneously held at the stadium.
Organised by the Directorate of Education, the two tournaments are being attended by over 450 wrestlers and 18 basketball teams from different States.
