Well done: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit distributing prizes at the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas celebrations organised by TERI on Wednesday. Union Minister for Renewable Energy Vilas Muttemwar looks on.
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Wednesday that the Delhi Government, which has been giving grants of Rs. 6,000 for purchase of solar water heater to individuals to promote alternative source of energy, would now be constituting teams of school children and energy conservators to inspect hotels and other buildings where installation of solar energy equipment has been made compulsory. Speaking at Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas-2007 celebrations organised by TERI (The Energy Research Institute) and the Union Ministry for New and Renewable Energy to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister, the Chief Minister said the Delhi Government had been encouraging construction of green buildings, especially in view of the Commonwealth Games in 2010. She lauded the constructive role of children and eco-clubs in making Delhi one of the greenest cities in the world. Noting that Delhi had the largest eco-friendly CNG public transport fleet in the world, Ms. Dikshit called upon the people to join hands to preserve national resources for future needs and make use of new and renewable energy sources. She exhorted children to propagate renewable energy sources as natural resources being utilised for generation of energy were not going to last very long. The Chief Minister awarded students who are winners in essay, painting and debate competitions on the theme of “Akshay Urja”. Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Vilas Muttemwar and TERI Director-General R. K. Pachauri addressed the gathering, emphasising the importance of promoting renewable energy.
