Kumaraswamy ready to contest elections from north Karnataka

DONGAON: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Wednesday made a surprise announcement that he would contest the Assembly elections from north Karnataka.

The Chief Minister said this while addressing villagers after he receiving a rousing reception here. The decision to contest elections from north Karnataka was mainly to return the love and affection showered on him by the people and also to remove the misconception that elected representatives from south Karnataka were opposed to the development of this region.

Later talking to presspersons before leaving the village, Mr. Kumaraswamy said he was confident of winning from anywhere in north Karnataka.

To a question if he would contest from Jewargi, which had returned the former Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to the Assembly eight times in a row, the Chief Minister quipped, “why not.”

Asked if he would contest from north Karnataka and also Ramanagaram, the Chief Minister said no final decision had been taken in this regard.

He said it was wrong to say that north Karnataka had been neglected. He pointed out that compared to south Karnataka, north Karnataka had got more funds for development, yet it had remained backward.

The Chief Minister admitted that he did not get full cooperation from the bureaucracy in responding to the problems raised during his village stay programmes and the Janata Darshan.

It was only in Bangalore district that the response of the officials was good. He cited the example of officials in Ramanagaram Assembly constituency who attended to the problems of the people by conducting camps regularly.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said if officials in other districts emulated those in Ramanagaram, a majority of the people’s problems could be solved.
