dated August 23, 1957: Railway wagon explodes

Six persons were killed and nine injured at the transhipment yard of Katpadi junction, two miles from Vellore, as a result of an explosion in a railway wagon stacked with crackers and fireworks on August 22. The fireworks had been despatched from Sivakasi near Madurai to stations in North India for the coming Vinayaka Chathurthi festival. As a result of the explosion, a wagon standing nearby with bales of silk and cotton yarn also caught fire.
