Gaza City: The European Commission said it would allow the resumption of oil shipments to Gaza on Wednesday after a move that left large parts of the area in darkness for four days. The electricity supply from Gaza’s only generator began to falter on Friday and was cut on Sunday. Fuel deliveries to the power plant were suspended after the E.U. began to suspect the Hamas rulers were levying a tax on the power. However the fuel shipments were not renewed because the E.U. had notified the Israeli fuel vendor that it would not pay for them. Thousands were left without electricity for refrigeration, water supply and basic needs. Hamas has denied taxing the electricity supply and has invited the Commission to investigate — © Guardian Newspapers Limited, 2007
