Efforts on to get mega hospital for Madurai

To come up on an outlay of Rs.130 crore: Minister
On the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences

MADURAI: A healthcare institution on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has been planned for Madurai on an outlay of Rs.130 crore.

“The Chief Minister is making efforts to get Centre’s concurrence for the benefit of providing good medical care in various specialities to the people of southern districts,” the Health Minister, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, said here on Wednesday.

He was speaking at a function to lay the foundation stone for the Rs.22-crore extension building of the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) coming up at the Anna Bus Stand. The Local Administration Minister, M. K. Stalin, laid the foundation stone and launched other projects, besides distributing welfare assistance to women.

Mr. Ramachandran said that the State Government was planning to allocate Rs.30 crore for the proposed AIIMS in Madurai and get the remaining Rs.100 crore from the Centre.

Earlier, P. Mohan, Madurai MP, said that the AIIMS was a long-pending proposal for Madurai city and hoped that it would take shape soon. Mr. Mohan said that getting land for the medical institution should not be difficult and the authorities could even consider the 350-acre vacant land available at Austinpatti near here.

The GRH extension wing, construction of which will be completed in one-and-a-half years, will have trauma care, orthopaedic, neuro and head injury ward facilities.

Mr. Stalin distributed welfare assistance to beneficiaries, inaugurated the Koodal Nagar overbridge and a synthetic athletic track, all constructed on a total outlay of Rs.42.75 crore.

The Health Secretary, V. K. Subburaj, and the GRH Dean in-charge, S.M. Sivakumar, were among those who spoke.
