Gridlock zone: Traffic jams are common along the IT corridor (Rajiv Gandhi Road). A scene at the Shollinganallur junction.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) and the Chennai Traffic Police department have chalked out a series of road safety measures for the first 10-km stretch of the Information Technology corridor (Rajiv Gandhi Road) to help reduce fatal accidents and traffic bottlenecks.

The plan includes construction of five mini-flyovers.

Out of the total of 20-km IT corridor spanning from Madhya Kailash Temple to Siruseri, only three-km stretch is complete on account of contractual problems and other issues relating to re-designing of the expressway to accommodate utility services.

The Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Sunil Kumar, and K.R. Viswanathan, Director-in-Charge of TNRDC, told reporters that the Police department would soon put up road signage, have visible policing and embark on a campaign to ensure that the road users adhered to traffic rules.

Mr. Viswanathan said efforts were on to improve lighting from the Thuraipakkam junction to Karapakkam.
