Australian Opposition wants judicial probe

Melbourne: Australian Opposition Labour Party has said it will not oppose Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews’ decision to challenge the court ruling overturning Mohammed Haneef’s visa cancellation.

While Opposition Immigration spokesman Tony Burke repeated Labour’s call for a judicial inquiry into the affair, he declined to support calls urging Mr. Andrews to abide by the ruling.

“We’ve always expected an appeal to be lodged. The decision as to whether the Government chooses to appeal or not has to be based on the legal advice they receive,” Mr. Burke was quoted as saying by The Australian on Wednesday.

Mr. Burke said it was “incredibly important” that community support for immigration and anti-terror laws was not undermined.

He refused to back calls from the Australian Greens for Mr. Andrews to resign, saying he was not going to “rush to judgment.”

However, Mr. Burke acknowledged some of Mr. Andrews’ actions “didn’t make sense.” — PTI
