NOIDA: Qualifiers had their say, as three of them made the quarterfinals, including one at the expense of the top seed Rushmi Charavarthi in the Unitech ITF women’s tennis tournament at the Noida Sports Stadium, here on Wednesday. Kyung-Yee Chae of Korea outplayed Rushmi for a 6-1, 6-3 on the strength of her strokes and the sting in her serves. The 26-year-old Korean left-hander called the shots right from the start, after Rushmi had held serve in the first game. Chae conceded a mere four points in pocketing the next six games and exposed her opponents inadequacies. Into the second set, there was a semblance of a fight when Rushmi broke back to be on par after being down 1-3, but after a brief rain interruption the Korean affixed her stamp of class firing an ace on her second matchpoint. Easy for Vasylyeva
Another qualifier, the 15-year-old Anastasiya Vasylyeva of Ukraine put out the second-seeded Montinee Tangphong of Thailand with similar ease, for a 6-3, 6-3 win. Janaki Gunuganti was the third qualifier to book a singles quarterfinal berth, as she got a walkover from Kelsey Sundaram. It was little consolation for Rushmi and Montinee that they combined well later to win their doubles quarterfinals. Wild card Shalini Sahoo played her heart out in a nerve-wracking battle that lasted three hours and nine minutes against Varanya Vijuksanaboon of Thailand before losing in the third set tie-break. The results: Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Kyung-Yee Chae (Kor) bt Rushmi Chakravarthi 6-1, 6-3; Sanaa Bhambri bt Sonal Phadke 6-1, 6-3; Tara Iyer bt Abby Hedges (Aus) 6-1, 6-1; Janaki Gunuganti w.o. Kelsey Sundaram (US); Varanya Vijuksanaboon (Tha) bt Shalini Sahoo 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(6); Ankita Bhambri bt Jung-Yoon Shin (Kor) 6-1, 7-5; Sandhya Nagaraj bt Ashmitha Easwaramurthi 6-0, 6-4; Anastasiya Vasylyeva (Ukr) bt Montinee Tangphong (Tha) 6-3, 6-3. Doubles (quarterfinals): Rushmi Chakravarthi and Montinee Tangphong (Tha) bt Vishika Chhetri and Sonal Phadke 6-4, 6-1; Sophia Mulsap and Varatchaya Wongteanchai (Tha) bt Julia Goloborodko and Anastasiya Vasylyeva (Ukr) 4-6, 6-1, 7-5; G. K. Shweta and Asha Nandakumar bt Sagarika Phadke and Ragini Vimal 4-6, 6-3, 6-1; Ankita Bhambri and Sanaa Bhambri bt Prerana Mythri and Archana Venkataraman 6-4, 6-0.
