Corrections and clarifications

A sentence in the report “Sen’s remarks hold up Parliament” (“News”, August 23, 2007) said the United Progressive Alliance would not compromise with the dignity of the Lok Sabha. The correct usage is “compromise the dignity of the Lok Sabha.” According to the Oxford Dictionary, the verb “compromise” means “weaken or harm by accepting standards that are lower than is desirable.”

A sentence in “Plea to reconsider judgment in Indra Sawhney case of 1992” (“News”, August 23, 2007) said, “Caste system which has been put in the grave by the framers of the Constitution is trying to raise its ugly heard in various forms.” It was a typographical error for head.

The report “Agreement with NSG must not contain reference to testing: M.R. Srinivasan” (“News”, August 19, 2007) said: “The two U.S. companies — GE and Westinghouse — too should not be discounted from the field.” Westinghouse is owned by the Japanese company Toshiba. Sandeep Dikshit clarifies that though Toshiba took over most of Westinghouse’s nuclear business about a year ago, all design and technical activities still remain firmly in the American fold. Dr. Srinivasan’s point was about establishing a good relationship with the design centre since its prowess is as yet unchallenged.

In a graphic (“Business”, August 22, 2007), the rupee rate on August 17 was wrongly mentioned as 43.3350. It was 41.3350, as correctly reported in the text.
