Ludhiana: After causing extensive damage to the cotton in Punjab, whitefly insect has now attacked pulse crop in the State. “Pulse crops such as urdbean, mungbean and soybean have been heavily attacked by an insect whitefly. The attack has been witnessed in all the pulse-growing areas of Punjab,” said an official release of Punjab Agricultural University(PAU) on Thursday. This insect has appeared in large numbers due to hot weather conditions coupled with a dry monsoon spell prevailing in the state over the last few weeks, said a PAU expert adding such weather conditions are extremely conducive to rapid multiplication of the pest. In case of a severe attack, there is total blackening of the crop, drying of leaves and total crop failure, said an expert.
