“Tamil industry not allowing movies to be brought into DVD format”

CHENNAI: Moser Baer that has pushed the envelope on economical DVDs is lamenting the fact that the Tamil film industry does not allow movies to be brought into DVD format until three years after their release.
Speaking at the inauguration of the first Moser Baer outlet in R.A. Puram, G.Dhananjayan, chief operating officer, Entertainment Business, said the Malayalam and Hindi film industries allowed movies to be put in DVD format in less than a year after their release. But it was very difficult to obtain permission to bring out Tamil movies because of the restrictions the industry placed.
‘Guru,’ he said, was an exception as it was a Mani Ratnam film and also because the original movie was made in Hindi. Films such as ‘Mozhi’ too have not yet come out in the DVD format. “Mozhi has been held up because the film is doing very well…but production has started and it will be released in September,” he said. The showroom has a collection of films in several languages including Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. It also has a section on devotional videos and animated films.
“This store is meant for providing in one place all the popular titles,” Mr. Dhananjayan said. “The next store will be on Anna Salai. We are looking to open at least 10 stores in Chennai,” he said.
There are over 1,500 titles in the showroom.
