New arrival: Film star Abhishek Bachchan during the launch of next generation mobile handset Motorazr-II- V8 in New Delhi on Thursday.
NEW DELHI: It was probably his first “big” meeting with media persons in the Capital after his much talked about marriage with the former Miss World, but Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan pulled it off with his crisp one-liners and wit-laced remarks. In town on Thursday to endorse a mobile phone described as a “weapon of mass communication” Abhishek, who came dressed in a traditional black “band-gala” suit, quipped: “As our country celebrates its 60th year of Independence, I am glad that the company has chosen to showcase its product through an Indian. It is very thin and I am also trying to become one.” After some prodding by journalists, Abhishek said his own roller-coaster ride in tinsel town and the company’s fortunes in the market had some similarities. “If you see our career graphs, you will notice quite a few similarities. When I entered the film industry, there was a lot of hype, but things did not work out after that. The rest of course is history for both of us I guess.” “As an actor,” he added, “I cannot afford to rest on my past laurels. I am always trying to improve. I get up everyday in the morning and try to outdo what I had done yesterday. This product can literally run your life. If you are driving and suddenly find yourself caught in a traffic jam, you can simply listen to music.” Asked if he would gift the handset to his wife Aishwarya, pat came the reply: “Well, she already has one. Are you married? You always share things with your life partner. Must give things to your wife first. My father Amitabh Bachchan gifted me this company’s phone in 1994. As an ambassador you are lending your name to a product, so you have to use it. Otherwise you will be cheating yourself.” Brushing aside a query on the six-year sentence awarded to Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek said he wasn’t qualified to speak about it as he was not a lawyer. “All of us in the industry are relieved that Sanjay is a free man. We hope he gets peace of mind and strength,” he said, adding that he respects the law of the land.
