Sharif can come back: Musharraf
Islamabad: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said on Thursday the former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, could return home.
Hours after the Supreme Court judgment allowing Mr. Sharif to return to the country, Gen. Musharraf told a gathering here that Mr. Sharif had gone into exile of his own choice as he was keen on avoiding a jail term.
He said Mr. Sharif was convicted by the courts and later he approached a friend for his exile. Gen. Musharraf said Mr. Sharif was the head of a political party and could lead his party, but he said the run-up to the elections should be smooth and there should be no political destabilisation in the country.
He said political reconciliation and national consensus on issues confronting the country were the need of the hour.
About the Presidential elections, he said it was the constitutional requirement that they should be held between September 15 and October 15 this year. He said there was no constitutional bar for his election by the present assemblies. — PTI
