KOCHI: Prices of vegetables in the Ernakulam market are likely to go up by Saturday in view of the huge demand during the Onam season. On Friday, the price of a kilogramme of bitter gourd soared to Rs. 25 in the wholesale market. A kilogramme of carrot cost Rs. 17, while beans and cucumber were sold at Rs. 18 and Rs. 10 a kilogramme respectively. N.H. Shameed of the Ernakulam Market Stall Owner’s Association said the price of carrot may rise to Rs. 22 a kilogramme. The demand has shot up going by the number of loads of vegetables reaching the Ernakulam market daily. As many as six additional loads of vegetables from Tamil Nadu and nearby areas were distributed in various wholesale depots. The consumers are feeling the pinch of the price rise. Suresh. R, a bank employee, said the Government should intervene and ensure supply of adequate quantities of vegetables through its own outlets. Rema Venugopal, a housewife, said efforts should be made to provide quality vegetables at reasonable rates. Prices of essential commodities seem to be remaining steady with the merchant community reporting adequate supply of items in the market. Venkitesh Pai of the Ernakulam Merchants Union said the demand in the market was less, as the Government had already procured huge loads of essential items for sale through its outlets.
